It was 1945, just after the end of World War II, when Middletown resident Mike Formisano (aka “Big Mike” ) decided to open a one-man appliance repair shop. Operating out of a small garage next to the family home on Cottage Street, Big Mike worked long, hard hours to make the repair business a success.
As he did, his sons Michael and Gary became interested in the appliance business as well and contracted with W.T. Grants to handle the deliveries and service on the products sold by the retail giant. With both ventures going well, the three decided in 1970 to combine their talents. Still operating out of the garage in the late 1970s, they purchased an abandoned old train station on Low Avenue in Middletown and spent an entire year renovating it. This was the point when they were able to establish Michael’s Appliance as a full-scale appliance center, with complete offerings in sales, service, and parts.
Consistent success and growth in the ensuing years led to three more moves, as the company constantly sought facilities that would allow for the excellent shopping experience it was determined to offer its customers, including a sizeable showroom and the most extensive selection of products and price ranges available anywhere. The current 15,000-square-foot facility at 585 East Main Street – conveniently located off Route 17, just minutes from Route 84 and Route 211 in Middletown – was constructed especially with this vision in mind. Among other things, it features the inspiring Living Kitchen by Wolf/Subzero that allows customers to envision products in their own home environments.
Today, Gary Formisano leads the company in the faithful pursuit of this longtime vision – honoring the legacy of his late father and brother and leading a new generation of Michael’s professionals who continue the legacy of exceptional service and value.

A Michael’s veteran, Frank joined the company in 1995. After 20 years of handling both sales and marketing, today Frank heads up marketing while overseeing customer relations.

Chris’ attention to detail makes each sale about much more than just getting an order. It’s about having the absolute best knowledge in the industry of the products we carry – how they work, what makes them unique, and how each one might be the perfect fit for the needs of a customer. It’s also about understanding the sale process so well – all the way through to delivery – so the Michael’s customer finds the experience simple and satisfying. He also serves as the company’s principal buyer — ensuring prompt shipment to facilitate your delivery, while maintaining the highest quality and best selection of products available.
Parts and Service Manager
Experienced in inventory control and a seasoned technician, Trulane oversees all of the daily service and parts operations. As the principal buyer for parts he also is charged with maintain our extensive in-house inventory. Originally an employee of the Sears parts store in Middletown, Trulane has been with us since they closed in 2009.
Parts and Service Associate
Stella has an extensive 37-year background in the appliance parts and service business, including experience as a branch manager at the Sears Parts store in Middletown and Metro Factory Service in Dover, NJ. Her experience has allowed us to combine parts and service into a single, one-stop department for anything repair related. This means more timely and efficient support of our customers.
With us since 2003, Julie handles all of the accounting in the store, and manages the clerical side of operations. Julie carries our philosophy of professional service to all of our vendors and works closely with our customers whenever warranty or billing issues arise.
Since 2007 Sergio’s vast experience in sales has given Michael’s yet another way to take care of our customers. Bilingual, Sergio effortlessly communicates with his customers to help them make the right choice the first time. Sergio worked for the Maytag Corp for eighteen years as a sales rep for Hoover. In his spare time he enjoys cooking for family and friends.
